Verbal description of spatial stimuli by 4-8 year old children

Asked 5 groups of children (6 boys and 6 girls each with mean ages of 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8) to recognize differences between each of 12 pairs of geometric drawings and explain how they were different. Differences involved inside-outside, touching-not touching, and relative orientation. Recognition of differences was evidenced in 3 ways, each of which improved with age. Explanations using the name of a geometrical form, a graphic sign, or the name of an object varied with age and the nature of the drawing. The way spatial reality and social environment influence these responses is discussed. (English summary) (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2007 APA, all rights reserved)
