Functional cerebral specialization in the development of face recognition / A propos de la notion de specialisation cerebrale fonctionnelle: le developpement de la reconnaissance des visages

Reviews research on the role of functional cerebral specialization in the development of face recognition. Data are presented on (1) the relationship between visual attention to faces and the capacity for face processing in newborns, (2) changes in individual face processing skills around the age of 2 mo, (3) functional hemispheric asymmetries in pattern and face processing during the 1st yr of life, (4) the pattern of cortical activation elicited by visual attention to faces in 2-mo-old infants, and (5) face processing deficits in children with unilateral prenatal or perinatal brain damage.
