Illumination, shading and the perception of local orientation

Investigated the perception of local surface orientation on a simple smooth object under different illumination conditions. In Exp 1, a croissant-shaped object with Lambertian shading was presented to 3 Ss. In Exp 2, the object was displayed to 2 Ss only as a silhouette Human errors were compared with computer simulations of an "ideal observer".
