Toward a new theory of eye guidance in reading / Vers une nouvelle theorie du guidage oculaire dans la lecture

Postulates an optimal position in each word where, if the reader's glance falls on it first, he will recognize it immediately. Two eye guidance strategies are described: (1) an intelligent strategy which involves other words visible to the peripheral vision and requires more time for word recognition (2) and a mechanical strategy in which the eye is automatically guided to the middle of each word, where its optimal position is generally located. Results of recent experiments slightly favor the mechanical hypothesis. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2005 APA, all rights reserved)
