Optimal landing position in reading isolated words and continuous text

Compared the nature and strength of the optimal landing position effect for continuous texts with the same effect for isolated words. Results from 20 Ss confirmed the existence of an optimal landing position in both reading conditions, although the effect for words in texts was weaker than for isolated words. The effect, however, existed in text reading, which suggests that within-word tactics during text reading are dependent on the eye's initial landing position in words. Individual fixation durations were dependent on within-word tactics. The initial landing position in words must be taken into account to understand eye-movement behavior during text reading. Comments are offered on word length and frequency in both conditions. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2005 APA, all rights reserved)
