Verification of comparative sentences

The comprehension of comparative sentences expressing inequality was studied in 35 Ss with a verification task. Ss were simultaneously presented a picture and a statement (e.g., "The blue square is not smaller than the red square.") and were requested to respond as quickly as possible by pushing buttons as to whether the statements were true or false. It was found that 2 main factors, type of comparator and type of adjective, had a significant influence on the duration of processing. In addition, for true sentences there was a strong interaction between these 2 factors. This interaction reflected the transformations that Ss applied when processing sentences containing a double negation. (19 ref) (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2005 APA, all rights reserved)
