Role of knowledge of results in the verification of a geometry puzzle / Role de la connaissance de resultats dans le controle de la resolution d'un puzzle geometrique

Two experiments investigated the effects of knowledge of results (KR) on the evolution of a solution to puzzle. In Exp I, 100 male and female Ss were assigned to 1 of 3 groups: total, partial, or no KR during the learning phase of the puzzle solution. In Exp II (87 Ss), the "no KR" group was replaced by a "maximum guidance" group: Ss were supplied with photographs of puzzle pieces building to a solution. KR facilitated puzzle solution; total KR from 1st trial-and-error through solution was important to Ss. However, it was difficult to locate at each step toward solution the precise effects of KR. Ss appeared to integrate the information progressively without the process leading to immediately observable modifications in behavior.
