Intermodal transfer of spatial arrangement of the component parts of an object in infants aged 4-5 months

Investigated 48 infants' (aged 4 mo 12 days to 5 mo 8 days) tactual discriminative abilities and intermodal transfer in 2 experiments. The experiments addressed (1) whether Ss process and discriminate tactually information about different spatial arrangements of elements of an object, in the absence of visual control and (2) whether Ss can transfer this information from touch to vision. Ss were administered a habituation procedure and a procedure to test reaction to novelty. Ss discriminated tactually between different spatial arrangements of 3 elements of an object (Exp 1), and transferred this information to the visual mode (Exp 2).
