What information is transferred between vision and touch in infants? Studies on shape and weight / Quelles informations sont reellement transferees entre la vision et le toucher chez le bebe? L'exemple de la forme et du poids

Presents results of a series of experiments on transfer between visual and haptic modalities in infants. The experiments tested intermodal transfer in relation to a property common to both touch and vision (i.e., shape) and in relation to a property that can be perceived directly only by touch (i.e., weight). In 2-mo-old infants, reversible transfer of form occurred with two-dimensional stimuli (pictures) but not with 3-dimensional stimuli (objects). In 4-mo-old infants, reversible transfer of object weight was observed. Results are discussed in relation to the concept of amodal perception.
