Constraints on intermodal transfer between touch and vision in infancy

(from the chapter) [investigated] the proposal that a single, amodal process underlies object perception / [examined] the development of transfer both from touch to vision and from vision to touch before the emergence of eye-hand coordination / 2 specific age groups were tested, 2- and 5-mo-old infants / at 5 mo, visually guided prehension is developing rapidly / wanted to know whether intermodal perception of objects was possible during onset of visually guided reaching / 2-mo-old infants [were tested] to determine whether intermodal perception of objects was possible prior to the onset of visually guided reaching / [hypothesized] that the asymmetries of transfer observed at 2 and 5 mo of age were highly dependent on the development of the haptic system / designed experiments to determine what conditions were necessary for reversible transfer to take place /// intermodal transfer at 2 mo: the weakness of the perceptual function of the hand / intermodal transfer in 5-mo-old infants: the importance of motion in haptic exploration of objects (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2005 APA, all rights reserved)
