Infants' Haptic Discrimination of Spatial Orientations

The present research addressed the question of the haptic manual discrimination of spatial orientations by 5-month-old infants. A familiarization (with a 90-s fixed-duration) / reaction to novelty procedure was used. The results revealed that infants are able to discriminate haptically, without visual control, between vertical (defined gravitationally) and 45 degrees -oblique rods. These findings are similar to those obtained in infant visual perception. We discuss the implications of these results for the development of haptic orientation perception.
