Notes that observing a given spatial frequency elicits temporal threshold elevations for the detection of this same spatial frequency. This elevation reaches a maximum for inspection periods which are too short--before 1 sec--to involve an explanation in terms of a neurosensory adaptation process. The duration of these inspection periods depends on the spatial frequency. It is suggested that the temporal threshold for detection of one grating depends on its spatial frequency in the same manner as the contrast threshold depends on it (modulation transfer function).
