Two carriers for motion perception: Color and luminance

Conducted 3 experiments with 3 observers to study the role and interactions of color and luminance in apparent motion (APM). Results indicate that color plays a substantial role in APM. Color cues can be added to break the ambiguity of incoherent motion patterns, enhance the perception of coherently moving targets, and dominate luminance-induced motion. Findings support neurophysiological frameworks according to which there exist significant interactions among the neuronal pathways mediating the perception of basic visual attributes such as color, motion, form, and depth.
